American flight controllers are increasingly looking for additional employment and reporting ill, as they continue to work without pay amid the government shutdown, the transportation secretary has stated.

"The controllers are becoming strained," the official informed a news outlet on the weekend, as some flights were grounded on the California shoreline due to personnel deficits.

After the federal closure on 1 October, air traffic controllers, who are considered critical staff, were told to continue performing their jobs uncompensated.

But some have been absent, leading airports to stop or slow their plane traffic, which has exacerbated setbacks due to weather and additional factors.

"I observe the pressure," Duffy said in an discussion on Sunday Morning Futures, adding that he had spoken to several controllers to listen to their worries firsthand.
