In a significant move for their rebuilding roster, the Chicago White Sox have welcomed slugger Munetaka Murakami, completing a $34 million contract with the high-profile player.

Deal Structure and Incentives

The contract features a seven-figure signing bonus, to be paid within 30 days, alongside annual pay of $16 million for the upcoming season and $17M for the final year.

Notably, Murakami's final-year pay can increase based on award achievements in 2026:

• An additional $1M for winning the MVP award.
• $500,000 for finishing in the top three in MVP voting.
• $250,000 for finishing between fourth and tenth.
• $250,000 for earning the top rookie honor.

The agreement provides that he will not be optioned to the minor leagues without his consent and allows him to become a unrestricted player at the end of the term. Further benefits include a team-provided interpreter and airfare between his home country and the States.

Transfer Payment and Historical Context

As part of the signing, Chicago must pay a compensation payment of roughly $6.58 million to the Tokyo Yakult Swallows, Murakami's previous team in Japan's NPB. The Yakult organization get a additional payment of 15% triggered incentive payments.

Over his eight-year tenure with the Swallows, Murakami has posted a .270 career batting average with 246 homers, 647 RBIs, and 977 Ks in nearly 900 games. Early in his career playing mostly at first base, he has since transitioned to the hot corner.

WBC Heroics

Murakami's heroics were on global view during the last World Baseball Classic. In the semi-final against Mexico, he hit a game-ending double that scored teammates for a come-from-behind 6-5 victory. The next night in the title match against the United States, he blasted a tying shot in the second inning, paving the way for Japan's eventual 3-2 victory.
