An extensive manufacturing complex situated on the outskirts of the capital is dealing with nuclear contamination following a government taskforce detected traces of the dangerous isotope Caesium-137 at 22 manufacturing plants inside the site, which includes businesses that export frozen marine products.

Probe and Detection of Pollution

The country's officials initiated an inquiry when the American FDA detected Caesium-137, a nuclear isotope, in a shipment of chilled breaded shrimp sent by a local company.

The FDA issued an advisory instructing distributors and sellers to discard the goods and avoid selling it, even though the detected level was far below the agency's intervention threshold. It added that the quantity of Caesium-137 they had detected would not pose an acute risk to consumers.

The FDA explained: “The primary health effect of concern following longer term, ongoing small amount exposure (eg through eating of contaminated products or water over a period) is an increased chance of the disease, resulting from harm to DNA within living cells.”

Widespread Pollution and Medical Checks

Radioactivity tests showed at least twenty-two plants in the industrial zone were affected. The official team did not identify the twenty-one other production facilities, but said they would promptly undergo cleanup processes carried out by Indonesia's nuclear agency.

A senior official declared that residents living in strongly polluted areas would be relocated until the site was decontaminated, adding that the safety of the inhabitants was the “top priority”.

Medical officials also conducted checks on local employees and people located near the industrial estate, identifying nine individuals who tested positive for exposure to Caesium-137. They were referred to a medical facility before being allowed to go back.

Cleanup and Isolation Plans
