Hardline Ex- Congressman J.A. Kast Elected as Chile's Incoming Leader.
After a definitive final ballot, far-right figure José Antonio Kast has clinched the presidential office in Chile.
A Commanding Victory
With over 99% of votes tallied, Kast garnered 58.17% of the vote, overcoming leftist contender Jeannette Jara, who earned 41.83%.
This marks Kast's third presidency, having in the past been beaten by the sitting president, Gabriel Boric, in the 2021 runoff.
Campaign Built On Security and Immigration
Noted for his strong socially conservative views and praise for the period of former leader Augusto Pinochet, Kast's electoral bid was largely centered on promises to combat rising insecurity and radically reduce migration.
He frequently cited immigrants, especially the roughly 330,000 unauthorized individuals in Chile, for public safety problems. Throughout the election cycle, he issued an final demand for them to leave before the inauguration or face removal.
His policy ideas featured Trump-inspired measures such as erecting camps, border walls, perimeter fencing, and increasing the army presence on the northernmost frontier.

Leading Lacking a Strong Majority
Despite his clear popular vote victory, Kast is not expected to command an overall majority in Congress, not in the Chamber of Deputies or the Senate, even if all right-leaning parties are combined together.
This political situation may complicate his policy goals, such as a vow to cut public spending by billions within 18 months—a proposal for which he has not offered concrete steps.
"There are numerous things about what a Kast presidency will look like that are uncertain because he has not said the way he will implement them," commented a political science expert.
The professor stated, "On the economy, it is highly probable we will see austerity policies typical of the right-wing. However the area with considerably less doubt is on security policy, because that has been his workhorse across the race."
