Meteorologists have indicated a chilly beginning to the new year, with snowfall expected throughout a lot of the UK. Revelers are advised to wrap up as bitterly cold temperatures are predicted for New Year's Eve.

Hogmanay Celebrations Go Ahead Despite Alerts

The Scottish capital's iconic Hogmanay events are planned to go ahead, unlike last year's cancellation. This proceeds amid weather alerts for snow in northern Scotland.

"A chilly New Year's Eve evening for those partying, so warmer clothes will be needed," stated the weather service.

Celebrations Under Open but Cold Skies

Across the UK, the weather is set to be ideal for fireworks celebrations, with no rain and good visibility. Readings are forecast to be cold, making extra layers a necessity, said forecasters.

To the north, skies will be more overcast, but this is not expected to hamper visibility for watching fireworks. "There is no expectation of low cloud, mist or murk, so you ought to be able to see fireworks, just not stars," added one forecaster.

Widespread Snow Warnings for Friday

As we enter Friday, snow alerts have been issued across Northern Ireland and stretching from Wales, across parts of the north-west, the West Midlands and reaching London and most of the south-east of England.

• Hold-ups and call-offs are anticipated on the transport network.

The Mercury Forecast to Drop Even More

Going into the new year, it will be "frosty everywhere where you are," stated forecaster Simon Partridge. The weather are expected to fall even more as snow and gale-force winds are predicted to affect the north of the country.

Approximately 10cm of snow is expected to have built up in some areas by Friday morning, potentially hitting 30cm on the top roads and uplands.

Public Health Warnings Released

Meanwhile, serious cold weather health warnings are in force for the north-east and north-west of England. These are set to remain in place until noon on 5 January, with readings likely to fall to between 3C and 5C.

Authorities said this meant the weather could to lead to notable consequences across health and social care services. This involves a expected uptick in the fatality numbers among those with health conditions or those 65 and older.
