A recent study indicates that individuals who come off blockbuster slimming jabs like Mounjaro or Wegovy can put back on shed pounds far faster than those who end conventional diet and exercise regimens.
Findings released in a leading medical journal demonstrates that while overweight individuals often shed substantial amounts of their body weight while on the medication, the weight comes back at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month once they quit.
"People purchasing these medications need to be aware of the potential of quick weight regain when the therapy is stopped," stated researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.
Such speed of regain means a return to starting mass within about 18 months.
Comparing Approaches
The research, which looked at 37 of studies involving thousands of patients, compared the effects of these new drugs with conventional dieting.
Scientists point out that individuals who shed pounds through dieting generally experience a slower creep back—approximately 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.
The Reason for the Rapid Regain
Doctors believe the way of the injections is key to understanding the accelerated rebound.
The injections copy a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which controls appetite.
"Sustained high doses of the hormone concentrations several times higher than the body's typical production might result in the system to produce less of its own natural GLP-1, and may also reduce sensitivity to its effects," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics specialist.
"Stopping of this GLP-1 'fix' leads to appetite is no longer kept in check, making excessive eating much more probable."
An Ongoing Issue?
Health authorities suggest the jabs for individuals with weight-linked medical conditions, alongside recommended diet and exercise modifications.
Professionals argue that, given the high risk of weight regain, the treatment should be considered ongoing.
This opinion is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who say that the results "underscore the long-term character of obesity," comparing it to managing diseases like diabetes.
User Experiences
Users who have stopped the jabs describe a sudden resurgence of appetite.
"It felt as if a switch activating and I was suddenly extremely hungry," described a patient.
This challenge is compounded if individuals have not developed lasting lifestyle or habit changes during treatment.
Significant Adoption
Figures suggest that millions of adults in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the past year, with demand remaining high.
- Use is more common among women than males.
- The 40s and 50s demographic shows the greatest usage rates.
- Many obtain the medications through private healthcare rather than public health services.
Ultimately, researchers caution that while GLP-1 drugs are effective tools for weight loss, they are not a magic solution and long-term success hinges on combined behavioural changes.
