The 'Breaking Bad' Creator Reveals He Has a Plan for How The Apple TV+ Show Will Conclude... For Now.

Vince Gilligan could not have predicted that Pluribus would become a breakout success. “I am so grateful to the audience,” Gilligan says. “I was surprised by the show being as talked about as it is, and it makes me overjoyed.”

Now that Season 1 of the hit sci-fi show reaching its finale—and the next chapter officially in the works—the creative team opened up about the fan response and whether it will influence the future direction of Pluribus.

Regarding the Tremendous Audience Reaction

One could easily to get sidetracked by the constant speculation and fan theories about Pluribus. The creator is making a conscious effort to ignore the noise.

“It feels like constantly eating your favorite dessert and being in a state of bliss,” he describes. “It's the greatest thing, but I hear about it through word of mouth, and that's by design. Not once have I looked myself up on the internet, nor do I ever want to. It's quite the opposite. It's a bottomless pit I know I would get lost in and then I'd be living in squalor from Home Depot and I'd never leave my living room.”

Despite his concerted efforts, there’s no way to avoid the extremely enthusiastic response to the series. The only approach for the writers is to accept it graciously and try not to let it dictate the story of the show.

“It is not our goal to change the plot,” says co-executive producer Alison Tatlock. “The plot we develop is not influenced by what people are saying.”

“Better to keep our focus on the work,” Gilligan adds.

The Big Question: Does Vince Gilligan Have a Plan for the Conclusion of Pluribus?

So if the writers are not listening by public opinion, can we assume they have already decided how Pluribus will ultimately end? Essentially yes… in a way.

“We have some compelling concepts about where the show might end up,” he states. “but we are always ready to discard a good idea for a more brilliant plan. That philosophy has guided us in excellent shape on Better Call Saul and on Breaking Bad even before that. We scrap ideas when we get a better idea and I imagine we will be doing that.”

Then again, if they hit a wall, executive producer Gordon Smith has a humorous idea to serve as a last resort.

“I constantly suggest that the entire story is inside a snow globe, and that we'll pull back at the end and that's where they've been all along,” he says humorously, “but no one is buying it.”

Alternatively, why mess with the classics?

“I want Carol to wake up in bed next to Bob Newhart,” Gilligan adds, smiling.

Pluribus is streaming now on Apple TV+.
