“How can a joyful rabbi who went to a beach to spread happiness and light, to make the world a better place, meet his end in this way?” a family member asked.
Schlanger and his wife had recently celebrated the birth of their youngest child in October.
Alexander Kleytman
Alexander Kleytman was also confirmed among the deceased, as stated by his wife.
She recounted the events leading up to the shooting, explaining they were standing when the gunfire began. “He moved to protect me because he wanted to stay near me,” she recalled.

French foreign ministry have confirmed that French man Dan Elkayam is a casualty.
Officially, a senior official expressed that France shared the grief of his family and loved ones, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.

One of the injured is a member of the public who rushed to the scene to tackle one of the attackers. Called a hero, he sustained bullet wounds but is recovering well in hospital.
Arsen Ostrovsky
One of those wounded is Arsen Ostrovsky, a human rights lawyer. Sources state he was injured and underwent treatment in hospital.
Communicating, he recounted the scene as an “utter carnage,” but also noted the actions of those who came to assist. He said he believed it was a “stroke of luck” he was alive.
Evan Zlatkis
Evan Zlatkis, a media director, was another casualty in the shooting. He told reporters he listened to “dozens and dozens” of gunshots.
“Initially, I believed it was something less lethal, but it’s gone into my own skin and into my leg,” he explained. “I was hit. They bandaged me up. I’m ok.”
