Uche Ignites Dominant Palace Win at Shelbourne.
Even though entering their first-ever European campaign, Crystal Palace are learning very quickly. Without star players like forward Jean-Philippe Mateta and defender Daniel Muñoz, the Eagles departed Dublin with a comfortable result that virtually secures them a place in the Europa Conference League playoffs.
A further three points in their next fixture against Finland's KuPS should be enough to seal straight passage to the last 16, especially following a prior setback against Strasbourg.
Fringe Players Grasp the Moment
This match provided a platform for some of Palace's lesser-used players to shine. Christantus Uche, making only his second start after joining on loan from Getafe, opened the scoring with a clinical goal. Striker Eddie Nketiah added a second, finding the net for the second consecutive succession.
The Shelbourne team that had finished their domestic season were outmatched even for a largely rotated Palace outfit. The Londoners were already weakened by the reports that Mateta and Muñoz are sidelined with leg problems.
Control Asserted from the Outset
In spite of torrential rain in Dublin, Palace quickly established dominance. A flowing passing sequence in the 11th minute, sparked by Daichi Kamada's clever pass, let Nketiah to lay on Uche for a simple tap-in.
Youngster Adam Wharton came close minutes later, fizzing a powerful shot over the bar. Nketiah subsequently claimed for a penalty after bursting into the area, but the referee waved away the appeals.
The formerArsenal striker did not have wait long to find his goal, prodding home from a yard out after Uche's effort had hit the post.
Shelbourne were clinging on for dear life. Defender Kameron Ledwidge was lucky to escape a booking for two agricultural tackles on Yeremy Pino, before Chris Richards struck the woodwork with a header from a corner.
Yeremy Pino Wraps Up the Game
The match was as good as over eight minutes from half-time. Yeremy Pino meandered past a series of comically weak challenges before coolly slotting a shot past goalkeeper Wessel Speel to extend the lead to 3-0.
After the break, coach Oliver Glasner took the chance to rest several players like Kamada and Wharton. Substitute Romain Esse came close to scoring his very first touch, but saw his effort blocked.
Esse was incredibly unlucky later on, seeing one shot strike off each posts before being clasped on the line. Uche also missed a glaring chance, showing there is still room for development in his game.
The only worry for Palace was a second-half knock to Justin Devenny, who limped off. This paved the way for 17-year-old striker Benji Casey to make his senior debut, capping an otherwise positive night for the visiting side.
