UN:Me: A Cerebral Thriller Merging Survival Horror and Among Us Gameplay

The recent Day of the Devs online presentation revealed a number of fascinating future games, but one in particular has captured attention: UN:Me. Developed by Historia and Shueisha Games, this solo adventure seems to fuse together the oppressive atmosphere of a Silent Hill title with the paranoid deduction core of Among Us.

"It's a distinctive game where a girl containing multiple personalities within her must escape from a maze of the psyche," explains developer Yasukazu Kawai.

Entering a Shattered Consciousness

In UN:Me, players take control of an unnamed heroine seeming to be of teenage years. Inside her exist four separate souls, each with their own anxieties and motivations. These souls can take over spontaneously, releasing their innermost phobias upon her without warning.

Based on revealed gameplay, much of the action unfolds within a eerie medical facility, while additional clips depict the main character exploring a desolate church.

An Environment of Individual Horror

"What makes you afraid of? What makes you uncomfortable?" poses creative lead Shun Sasaki. "Heights. Confined spaces. Authority figures. Elements that seem trivial to other people can trigger something primal inside us. This game delves into that concept — fears that are unique to every individual."

The central gameplay loop involves controlling whichever soul emerges at a particular moment. However, these souls will change against your will as you play. While exploring, every persona's fears become amplified and attack the protagonist one after another. As the persona shifts, so does the particular terror the player experiences.

Eerie Visuals and a Deadly Choice

Initially, UN:Me shares striking aesthetic parallels with the Silent Hill series. The hospital is populated by orderlies who all share the same face, with disturbingly broad grins. Figures in the waiting room have large blooms where their necks are. Floral motifs are an ever-present element, juxtaposing organic elegance with unnatural horror.

Yet, UN:Me introduces a unique twist. Players must determine which of the four souls haunting the heroine is the "true" one. "Each of the souls claims that the physical form belongs to them," explains a creator. "Throughout the game, you need to figure out who is authentic."

Once players have deduced a soul is an impostor, they are forced to destroy it. But, since every entity can deceive or hide the reality, it is very easy to make a mistake.

"Maybe you've already eliminated the true [soul] by your own actions," a voice states. "The final entity standing might be a fraud. In any case, your decisions are irreversible."

UN:Me does not yet have a confirmed release date, but it is available to wishlist on digital storefronts.
