Volcano Semeru Outburst in Indonesia Triggers Evacuations

The nation's Mount Semeru, the tallest summit on the island of Java, has exploded, blanketing multiple communities with volcanic ash, prompting evacuations and causing officials to elevate the warning to the maximum level.

The mountain in East Java province released searing clouds of hot ash and a mixture of rock, lava and gas that travelled up to 4 miles down its sides multiple times from midday to dusk, while a dense plume of fiery clouds rose 2km into the air, according to Indonesia’s Geology Agency.

The eruptions that occurred throughout the day compelled officials to raise the volcano’s alert level on two occasions, from the third-highest level to the highest, the authority reported. No casualties have been reported.

Over three hundred residents in the three communities most at risk in the district of Lumajang were evacuated to government shelters, according to a spokesperson for the national disaster mitigation agency.

He stated that increased activity of the mountain on the afternoon of Wednesday prompted officials to widen the hazard area to 8km from the crater. Residents were advised to keep away from an zone along the Besuk Kobokan River, which is the route of the lava flow, as searing gas flowed down Semeru’s slopes.

Footage on online platforms displayed a dense cloud of ash moving through a forested valley to a waterway beneath a overpass. Locals, some with faces covered with ash and water, fled to makeshift refuges or departed for other safe areas.

Regional news outlets reported that authorities were facing challenges to save about 178 individuals trapped on the 3,676-metre mountain at the Ranu Kumbolo observation station. The group included 137 hikers, 15 carriers, seven escorts and six tourism officials, according to an official with the national park.

“They remain secure at the Ranu Kumbolo station,” a spokesperson stated in a video statement. He noted the station was located 4.5km from the summit on the north side of the volcano, which is outside the trajectory of the hot cloud flow that was observed traveling to the south-southeast. Inclement conditions and precipitation forced the team to remain overnight there, he added.

The volcano, also called Mahameru, has erupted numerous times in the past 200 years. Still, as is the situation with numerous of the 129 live volcanoes in the archipelago, thousands of people continue to live on its fertile slopes.

The mountain's previous significant explosion was in December 2021, when 51 individuals were killed and hundreds others were injured and villages were buried in thick mud. The event forced the evacuation of more than 10,000 residents from their homes.

Indonesia, an island chain of more than 280 million inhabitants, sits along the Pacific seismic belt, a curved series of tectonic boundaries, and is prone to earthquakes and volcanism.
